how is alli different?
alli is clinically proven to boost weight loss when added to a reduced caloried, lower-fat diet. alli is the first pharmacy-only weight loss aid licensed throughout Europe - it isn't a miracle pill or quick-fix solution. It encourages steady, gradual weight loss and helps to reward your efforts where it matters – the scales.
alli works in a unique way. The active ingredient, orlistat, attaches itself to some of the body's enzymes that break down fat. This prevents some of the fat you eat from being digested and absorbed.
alli isn't a stimulant or an appetite suppressant. It's formulated to work only in your digestive system and should not affect your heart rate, your brain or cause sleeplessness.

How does alli work?
see how alli can help boost your weight loss by 50%. So, for every 2 lb you lose through your own efforts, adding alli can help you lose 1 lb more.
If you want to lose weight, it's important to understand how body fat accumulates in the first place. When you eat more calories than your body needs, your body will store the extra ones as body fat, making you put on weight. alli is an effective answer to help you lose the weight sensibly, and the alli programme gives you lots of help at every stage.

To make the most of the way alli works and to help you achieve your weight loss goals, you'll need to follow a reduced calorie, lower-fat diet and become more active.
How to take alli
Take one capsule, three times a day at mealtimes – before, during or up to one hour after each meal.
Swallow the capsule whole with water and do not take more than three a day.
alli works on the fat in your meals, so if you miss a meal or the meal doesn't contain fat, don't take a capsule.
You should also take a multivitamin every day at bedtime to ensure adequate absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.
alli in action
Fat is the most calorie-dense food you can eat, so limiting the absorption of some of it with alli and eating reduced calorie, lower-fat meals can help you lose weight. Here's how:
• to digest the food you eat, your body releases enzymes - there are different enzymes in your digestive system that break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats
• alli only works on the enzymes that digest fat, so proteins and carbohydrates aren't affected and your body can still absorb these nutrients as normal
• alli works in a unique way by attaching itself to some of the digestive enzymes that break down fat. This stops some of the fat you eat from being digested and absorbed, so the unabsorbed fat passes naturally out of the body in your stools.
why absorb less fat?
Fat is the most calorie dense food available. One gram of fat has more than double the calories of the same amount of protein or carbohydrate. So eating less fat is a sensible way of cutting calories and making a positive difference to your weight.
However, calories from any food source (including proteins and carbohydrates) that aren't used up or 'burnt off' by your body's daily energy requirements, can end up being stored as body fat.
To lose weight, you have to consume fewer calories, or use more calories than your body needs to maintain your current weight. When your calorie intake is less, your body will burn stored body fat for energy. And as you burn fat, you'll lose weight.
Simple but important adjustments
You needn't cut fat out of your diet entirely when you're on the alli programme as fat is an essential part of a balanced diet. In fact, the right amount of fat helps the body absorb vitamins and perform other essential functions. However, for the best chance of getting the weight loss results you want, you need to make some simple adjustments to your eating habits so you follow a reduced calorie, lower-fat diet.
You'll need to aim for reduced calorie, lower-fat meals of around 15g* of fat per meal. Keeping to this limit will help you avoid any diet-related treatment effects that may occur because of the way alli works.
*Based on a diet of 1400 calories per day. You calculate your individual calorie and fat targets based on the information provided in the alli pack or here
Move your body
When you consume fewer calories your body has to use its fat stores for energy and as it does that, you lose weight. When you exercise, you can encourage your body to burn fat stores more often, thereby increasing your weight loss.
Being more active on a regular basis is good for your general health and can encourage your body to burn fat stores more often, thereby increasing your weight loss. Try to get more active because it can also help you stop putting the weight back on.
diet-related treatment effects
What are diet-related treatment effects?
alli works in a unique way by preventing some of your body's enzymes from digesting about a quarter of the fat you eat. As undigested fat can't be absorbed, it passes naturally out of the body in your stools. Each alli capsule works on one meal at a time.
As a result of this mode of action, you may notice changes to your bowel movements. If you stick to your fat targets (follow the alli programme's healthy, reduced calorie, lower-fat diet) these should be manageable. However, if you eat too much fat, you increase your chances of diet-related treatment effects, including wind (flatulence), with or without oily spotting; sudden bowel motions; fatty or oily stools; loose stools.
Diet-related treatment effects
Most users only have one episode of diet-related treatment effects. Also, it's important to remember that these diet-related treatment effects are largely due to what you eat. If you stick to the recommended fat levels per meal, you're less likely to have any problems.
For example, it you eat a chicken breast meal containing 15g of fat and then take alli, about a quarter of the fat (4g) is undigested and passes out of your body (less chance of diet-related treatment effects).
On the other hand, if you take alli with a fatty meal, such as a burger and chips containing 80g of fat, about 20g of fat passes out of your body (and you are more likely to experience diet-related treatment effects).
Ddiet-related treatment effects.
The surplus fat that passes naturally out of your body is simply undigested fat resulting from how alli works. If you get a diet-related treatment effect, see it as a signal that you've eaten a meal or snack that may have contained more than your recommended fat target.
Tips to avoid diet-related treatment effects
• Find out more about how much fat a portion of your favourite food typically contains. By getting used to the recommended portions, you'll be less likely to accidentally go over your fat target.
• Distribute your fat allowance evenly across your meals for the day. Don't "save" fat grams from lunch and "spend" them at dinner - each meal and snack must be within your fat target – check your fat and calorie targets for more details.
• Be patient. It may take a little time to familiarise yourself with your targets. Most users who experience diet-related treatment effects at the start, learn how to reduce them.
Considering alli?
It's no secret that losing weight can be hard work when you do it alone. If you're fed up with disappointing results when you're trying to lose weight, and you now feel ready to commit to following a reduced calorie, lower-fat diet and getting more active, alli could be just right for you.
This means if you commit to a healthy lifestyle, alli can reward your hard work with 50% more weight loss. It works by preventing some of the fat you eat from being absorbed, so for every 2 lb (1 kg) you lose through healthy eating, with alli you can lose 1 lb (1/2 kg) more.
A healthier lifestyle, for life
Eating sensibly doesn't just last for a few weeks while you're 'on a diet' or following the alli programme. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to make long-lasting changes to your eating and exercise habits.
People who are able to adopt these changes can achieve their weight loss goals with the help of the alli programme. If you're ready to follow some simple recommendations, you could too
If you're 18 years of age or over and your body mass index (BMI) is 28 or above, alli may well be suitable for you. Ask your local pharmacist if you're unsure. Check your BMI with a calculation chart.
What's your BMI?
Being overweight increases your risk of developing several serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer, so you should see your doctor regularly for check-ups.
Small reductions in weight can offer significant health benefits. alli can help you lose weight to reduce these risks and enjoy better health.
Check your BMI here
Assess your weight by checking your body mass index (BMI) with a calculation chart. If you are overweight and your BMI is 28 or above, alli can help you lose weight and so improve your health. It's a good idea to check your BMI regularly to see how you're doing.
• BMI is a formula based on the measurement of your height and weight.
• Staying inside the recommended range for your height and weight is important to reduce health risks associated with overweight and obesity.
Find out your body mass index
• find your height (metres or feet) and your weight (kilos or stones)
• Multiply your height by itself and note the result and divide this result into your weight
• e.g height 1.72 metres , weight 80 kg BMI = 80/(1.72 x 1.72) = 80/2.9584 = 27.04
• Please note that BMI is calculated differently for children under the age of 18
• alli is only for adults who are overweight and have a BMI of 28 or above.
• If you are at all uncertain about whether alli is right for you or if you take other medication, please talk to your pharmacist or your doctor.
