Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK.
1 in 10 young people who are sexually active have Chlamydia – and they don't know it!
Chlamydia is easy to transmit between sexual partners. Both males and females very often have no symptoms.
However, if not treated, Chlamydia can cause pelvic pain, infertility and blocked fallopian tubes in females; in males, testicular problems and reduced fertility can occur.
Chlamydia is easy to diagnose and even easier to treat.
This test is only for Chlamydia. If you want to be tested for other STIs, speak to your pharmacist for advice on where to go.
Remember- use condoms to reduce the chance of getting or passing on an STI.
What to do if your result is positive:
If you have bought a test and the result is positive, don't worry. You can be treated quickly with antibiotics. Just go to any participating pharmacy offering the Clamelle chlamydia service. The pharmacist will provide you with appropriate sexual health advice and following consultation you can purchase Clamelle Tablets if the pharmacist confirms the treatment is suitable for you.
Clamelle Tablets are a new treatment for chlamydia available to buy from pharmacies. They contain Azithromycin, an effective antibiotic, now available without a prescription.
You must be 16 years or older. If you are younger, speak to the pharmacist.
This test kit is NOT suitable if you have any symptoms suggestive of any sexually transmitted infections (STIs). With Chlamydia most people do not have any symptoms.
This test kit can be used in pregnancy. However if you are pregnant and your result is positive, you will need to see your GP or visit a sexual health clinic for treatment.
General advice:
After coming into contact with Chlamydia (through sexual intercourse) it can take up to two weeks for the infection to occur. You should bear this in mind when you use this test.
