Survey Results
Diet:
Eating a healthy diet is important to supporting fertility. Animal fats, salt and simple carbohydrates like sugar should be avoided. 60% of women take up a healthier diet when trying to conceive, whereas only 40% of men do. One in six men continue to eat unhealthily.
Weight:
Being overweight or obese can harm your chances of conceiving. One in ten people remain overweight when trying for a baby. 11% of men remain overweight compared to 9% of women.
Exercise:
Exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle and also to improving and maintaining fertility. Half of women exercise when trying for a baby, compared to 60% of men. One in ten men still do no exercise at all though, harming their chances of conception.
Drugs:
Recreational drugs damage sperm quality. Sadly, 5% of men continue to use drugs when trying for a baby, despite very clear drawbacks of doing so.
Alcohol:
Three quarters of men continue to drink when trying for a baby. More than one in ten men would be considered heavy drinkers, even when trying for a baby, drinking more than the recommended weekly amount.
Smoking:
Smoking reduces the mobility of sperm and can distort their formation, making them weak. Despite this, more than 16% of men continue to smoke when trying to conceive and they are not alone. One in ten women also continue to smoke, neither of which is ideal.
Clothing:
The testes hang outside of the body to keep sperm at a cooler temperature. Wearing tight fitting clothing can keep testes too warm and restricts blood flow and production of sperm, leaving men with lower sperm counts. Just one in ten men wear looser clothing to improve their chances of conceiving.
Sex:
Of course, sex is the single most important factor in trying to conceive. Besides stopping contraception, having more sex is the most obvious step to take to improve your chances of conceiving. Men have a slightly higher sperm count in the morning, so having sex in the morning could just be the occasion on which you successfully conceive. Only 16% of men report having more sex in the morning, however a healthy quarter report having more sex in the evening.
Experts recommend maintaining a healthy and happy sex life when trying to conceive a child. It is well known that trying for a baby can put couples under pressure. More than 16% of men report that they felt more under pressure when trying for a baby and about 15% report that they found sex became more of a chore. More than one in ten said they found sex less satisfying, although well over a quarter said that they found it more satisfying, indicating that trying for a child can make sex more meaningful.
Age:
The mean age of mothers in the UK has increased markedly over the years. According to the Office of National Statistics, the mean age of mothers giving birth was 29.5. In 2000 it was 28.5.

Sperm Health
For such a tiny cell, sperm (or spermatozoa to give them their biological name) play a hugely important role in conception. Given this importance there are a lot of technical terms used and understanding those terms will help gain a better understanding of your sperm health.
As most people know the sperm are transported in a white/opaque fluid called semen. According to the World Health Organisation around 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen is considered normal, and there is between 1.5 to 6ml of ejaculate. This averages out to about 60 million sperm per ejaculation in the western world.
Fertility and Reproduction Facts:
It takes approximately 28 days for the female egg cell to develop. Women carry their eggs waiting to mature, men produce all their sperm during their adult lifetime.
It takes over 74 days for the sperm to mature and a further 20 days for the sperm cells to be ready for fertilisation. Together, this process is called spermatogenesis.
During spermatogenesis a cell goes through several stages of development to eventually reach the specialised cell with a head and tail that is required for conception. This sperm contains the man’s genetic material and is able to swim, fast, towards the egg – four times its own length in one second. This is equivalent to a man running approximately 400 metres in a minute!
Once at full maturity the sperm needs to swim up the cervical canal through the uterus and into the fallopian tube. This may not seem far, but it takes the equivalent amount of energy as a human swimming across the Atlantic in treacle! Of course this journey has to happen at exactly the right time to meet the egg.
A woman’s egg is ready only once a month. Assuming your partner’s periods are regular, a normal cycle is 28 days with ovulation on the 14th day (14 days from the start of menstruation)
A common method is for couples to aim to have intercourse in the four or five days leading up to and including the day of ovulation.
