Description

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Sorbsan Plus SA is a self-adhesive calcium alginate wound dressing. The calcium alginate wound contact layer is bonded to a secondary absorbent layer, which in turn is covered with a flesh-coloured, microporous, thin foam backing. This membrane extends to provide the dressing with a hypoallergenic acrylic adhesive border. The non-woven Sorbsan calcium alginate is high in Mannuronic acid, and low in Guluronic acid. The secondary layer absorbs excess exudate. This combination makes Sorbsan Plus SA one of the most absorbent self-adhesive dressings available.

PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The calcium alginate fibres of Sorbsan Plus SA swell and form a sodium-calcium alginate gel in contact with wound exudate.
This gel:
• Provides a ‘moist wound healing environment’
• Conforms to the contours of the wound
• Allows gaseous exchange
• Prevents ‘lateral strike through’ or ‘wicking’
• Minimises the risk of maceration to the surrounding tissue
• Facilitates wound healing
• Draws contaminating bacteria into the dressing, and away from the wound, along with wound exudate
• Minimises pain on dressing removal
• Minimises disruption to newly formed tissue on dressing removal
• Allows the dressing to be easily removed with saline (0.9%) solution.

Sorbsan Plus SA’s secondary layer:
• Absorbs excess exudate through the Sorbsan wound contact layer
• Wicks ‘laterally’, allowing greater absorption capacity
• Holds the exudate away from the wound, to minimise maceration
• Negates the need for a separate, absorbent secondary dressing.

• The backing layer of Sorbsan Plus SA:
• Provides the dressing with a self-adhesive border
• Enables easy application, without the need for secondary dressings, tapes or bandages
• Is flexible and conformable for use on difficult contours
• Allows gaseous exchange, and moisture vapour transmission
• Protects the wound from contamination by dirt or bacteria, thus reduces the risk of wound infection
• Allows the patient to shower with the dressing in place
• Helps maintain a moist wound environment.

INDICATIONS FOR USE:
Sorbsan Plus SA may be used on wounds where there is a high level of exudate. Sorbsan Plus SA is therefore suitable for the management of:
• Partial thickness and full thickness wounds
• Arterial, venous, and diabetic ulcers
• Pressure sores
• Post-operative wounds
• Fungating lesions.

Sorbsan Plus SA may be used in conjunction with graduated compression therapy for the management of venous leg ulceration, when so directed by a physician.

CONTRAINDICATIONS AND WARNINGS:
Do not use on patients with a known sensitivity, or who exhibit a sensitivity, to Sorbsan Plus SA dressing or any of its components.
Sorbsan Plus SA may be used on wounds which are clinically infected when:
• A medical practitioner is consulted
• Current wound treatment protocols are reviewed
• Underlying causes are addressed
• Appropriate antimicrobial therapy is given when so directed
• Sorbsan Plus SA is changed frequently to allow visual inspection of the wound.

Sorbsan Plus SA should be changed if:
• The dressing is not intact
• The dressing is not adhered to the skin fully
• Exudate escapes from under the dressing edges

No data is available to support the use of topical medicinal preparations in conjunction with Sorbsan Plus SA.
In the early stages of use, the wound may appear to increase in size. This is to be expected as the moist wound environment encourages autolytic debridement prior to granulation tissue formation and wound healing.

In common with other hydrophilic wound dressings, an initial “drawing” sensation may be experienced shortly after application. Wetting the wound with 0.9% sterile saline solution immediately before dressing application may help prevent this discomfort. As healing progresses and the wound becomes smaller less exudate is generally produced. If the wound is not producing enough exudate to gel Sorbsan’s fibres, a different dressing choice should be considered, in line with existing clinical protocols.

In the management of exuding wounds, Sorbsan Plus SA can only make the overlying condition conducive to healing. If after 4 weeks of using Sorbsan Plus SA there has been no improvement, the original diagnosis should be reassessed and current treatment practices
reviewed in line with existing clinical protocols.

Sorbsan Plus SA is a sterile, single use product. Do not use if the packaging is open, or has been damaged.

METHOD OF USE:
Sorbsan Plus SA should be applied under medical supervision.
Always use aseptic techniques.
PREPARATION:
• Use existing clinical protocols to clean / debride the wound in preparation for the application of Sorbsan Plus SA Calcium Alginate Wound Dressing
• Ensure that the skin surrounding the wound is clean, dry, and free from grease, soaps or
• detergents
• Select a dressing that is of a suitable size and shape
• Ensure a 5 mm overlap of the wound contact pad around the wound edge to allow for the dressing gelling and conforming
• Sorbsan Plus SA does not need to be cut to the size and shape of the wound.

DRESSING APPLICATION:
• Remove one piece of the two protective papers from the adhesive underside of the dressing
• Position Sorbsan Plus SA centrally over the wound bed, with the alginate layer facing downwards and the flesh coloured backing side facing away from the wound
• Press the exposed edge of the dressing onto the skin and apply with a rolling motion to the wound site
• Remove the remaining piece of protective paper from the underside of the dressing
• Press the remaining side of the dressing onto the skin using a rolling motion
• Ensure the dressing edges adhere well to the skin, and there are no wrinkles in the dressing.

DRESSING WEAR TIME:
• It may be necessary at first, when the exudates levels are at their highest, to change Sorbsan Plus SA dressings daily
• This frequency can be reduced as the exudate levels decrease, when deemed clinically appropriate
• When exudate levels are low, good clinical practice indicates that wound dressings should be replaced at least once every seven days. This enables assessment of wound condition, and thus a review of the effectiveness of current treatment practices, to be made
• In wounds where clinical infection is observed Sorbsan Plus SA should be changed daily to allow visual inspection of the wound. Always consult a medical practitioner, review the current wound treatment protocols, address the underlying causes and instigate appropriate antimicrobial therapy when so directed.

DRESSING REMOVAL:
• To remove Sorbsan Plus SA from the wound, press down on the surrounding skin and peel the dressing up at each edge
• Water / saline solution may be used to deaden the adhesive and aid removal if necessary
• Then whilst supporting the skin lift the dressing, along with the non-gelled part of the calcium alginate, away
• Irrigate the wound with 0.9% sterile saline solution to remove any Sorbsan gel left in the wound site
• Use existing clinical protocols to clean the wound in order to remove any remaining exudate residue before wound assessment or the application of further dressings.

PRESENTATIONS:
Packs containing dressings are individually sealed in peel a part envelopes.
